Many breeders are used to feeding their animals directly with fresh wheat bran. However, this practice is not advisable. When animals consume untreated new wheat bran, the sharp particles can irritate and damage the oral mucosa, leading to a condition known as stomatitis. This painful inflammation often causes the animal to refuse food even when hungry, as they struggle to chew or may spit out the feed after a few bites. A thick, white mucus continuously accumulates in the mouth, and visible signs such as redness at the root of the tongue and the base of the mouth can be observed. To prevent this issue, it's important to treat the new wheat bran before feeding. One effective method is to alkalinize the wheat bran using a 0.3% lime water solution. Soak the wheat bran in the lime water for about 30 minutes, ensuring it is fully covered. After soaking, spread the bran on a clean board or cement floor and let it sit for a while to soften. Then rinse it thoroughly with clean water before feeding. This process not only reduces the risk of stomatitis but also improves the flavor of the wheat bran and increases its calcium content, helping to prevent conditions like osteomalacia in livestock. If an animal already shows symptoms of stomatitis, immediate action is necessary. First, carefully remove any remaining wheat bran from the mouth and rinse with clean water to avoid further irritation. Then apply the following treatments: 1. Apply calcined gypsum powder to the affected area three times daily for three days. 2. Rub the area with a mixture of sesame oil and ash from rapeseed. 3. Spread honey mixed with stalk ash over the affected region. 4. Use a 1% violet solution to gently coat the mouth. 5. Apply a 1% sulfaglycerine emulsion to the oral cavity three times a day for three days. By taking these steps, you can help your animals recover faster and reduce the chances of future complications. Always ensure that feed is properly prepared and monitored to maintain the health and well-being of your livestock.
