Many breeders are used to feeding their animals directly with fresh wheat bran. However, this practice is not advisable. When animals consume untreated new wheat bran, the sharp particles can irritate and rupture the delicate oral mucosa, leading to stomatitis. This condition causes significant discomfort, making it difficult for the animal to eat properly.
Once an animal develops stomatitis, it may show reluctance to eat despite being hungry. It might bring the feed to its mouth but struggle to chew or even spit it out after a few bites. A white, cloudy mucus often accumulates in the mouth, and visible signs such as redness at the base of the tongue and inflamed areas in the oral cavity become apparent. The condition can lead to weight loss and general weakness if left untreated.
To prevent this issue, it's essential to treat the new wheat bran before feeding. One effective method is to alkalinize the wheat bran. This involves soaking the bran in 0.3% lime water. The amount of lime water should be enough to fully cover the wheat bran. Soak it for 30 minutes, then remove it and spread it on a board or cement floor to let it ferment slightly. Once softened, rinse the bran thoroughly with clean water before feeding. This process not only helps prevent stomatitis but also improves the taste of the wheat bran and increases its calcium content, reducing the risk of osteomalacia in livestock.
If stomatitis has already developed, immediate action is necessary. First, carefully remove any remaining wheat bran from the mouth and rinse the oral cavity with clean water to reduce the risk of infection. Then, apply the following treatments:
1. Apply calcined gypsum powder to the affected area three times daily for three days.
2. Mix sesame oil with ash from rapeseed and apply it to the sore spots.
3. Spread honey mixed with stalk ash over the affected area.
4. Use a 1% violet solution to gently coat the mouth.
5. Apply a 1% sulfaglycerine emulsion to the oral cavity three times a day for three days.
These steps can help soothe the inflammation, promote healing, and improve the overall condition of the animal’s mouth. Regular monitoring and proper feeding practices are key to maintaining the health and well-being of livestock.
