The built earthen ponds typically range in size from 3 to 5 mu (approximately 2,000 to 3,300 square meters) and are designed to maintain a water depth of at least 1.3 meters. The silt layer at the bottom should not exceed 12 cm to ensure good water quality and prevent excessive sediment accumulation. Ten days before the crabs are introduced, the pond should be treated with quicklime to disinfect and improve the environment. Afterward, it should be filled with water and left to stand for about a week to stabilize the conditions.
For cement pools, the area usually ranges from 75 to 150 square meters, with a water depth of over 1.2 meters. The pool floor should be covered with fine sand, approximately 8 to 12 cm thick, which needs to be sterilized and soaked in water for 10 days before use. This helps create a suitable habitat for the crabs and supports their growth.
Indoor facilities do not require plastic greenhouses or additional insulation. Instead, empty buildings can be used to construct smooth concrete floors. These pools are ideal for short-term maintenance and typically have an area ranging from 10 to 30 square meters. For cement pools, the stocking density should be around 1.5 to 2 kg per square meter. Before introducing the crabs, aquatic plants such as water peanuts should be placed in the pond, covering about one-third of the water surface. This provides shelter and feeding areas for the crabs. In indoor setups, the stocking density is slightly higher, around 3 to 5 kg per square meter.
Feeding practices vary depending on the growth stage. During the early phase, the diet should be primarily plant-based, including soaked or cooked wheat, soybeans, sweet potatoes, and vegetables. The daily feeding amount should be about 5% to 8% of the crab's body weight. Feeding is done once in the afternoon, with 30% of the food given between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., and the remaining 70% provided between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. As the crabs grow, the diet should gradually include more animal protein, such as small fish, shrimp, snail meat, and commercial feed, to support their development.
Greenhouse management involves keeping the doors closed to avoid unnecessary temperature fluctuations. If the plastic film is damaged, it should be repaired promptly. When the weather is warm, the water in the pool should be partially replaced every 1 to 3 days, removing 1/5 to 1/3 of the water each time. For indoor setups, ventilation is essential, and the floor should be sprayed with pond water 3 to 4 times daily to maintain proper humidity levels.
Disease prevention is crucial. Antibiotics can be mixed into the feed every 1 to 2 weeks, or the feed can be soaked in a liquid solution and fed along with a small amount of the residual liquid. This helps reduce the risk of infections and ensures healthier crabs throughout the growing period.
