On September 19th, the Nanken Green Agricultural Ecological Garden in Zhongnan Village, Huangnan Township, located on the outskirts of Changzhi City, was alive with activity. A row of banana plants stood tall and green, their broad leaves carefully tended by gardeners who were busy pruning and maintaining them. This year’s planting season brought a new addition to the garden—GM potted bananas, introduced last year as part of an innovative agricultural initiative.
These genetically modified bananas are specially bred for their resilience. They can withstand cold temperatures, require less water, and have a longer flowering period compared to traditional varieties. Not only are they edible and nutritious, but they also serve as attractive ornamental plants, making them a dual-purpose crop. The introduction of these bananas has not only diversified the village's agricultural output but has also significantly boosted farmers' incomes. Local residents are now able to sell both the fruit and the potted plants, creating a new source of revenue and promoting sustainable farming practices in the area.
