A groundbreaking bionic arm has been developed that allows users to sense temperature, touch, and even pain through their chest. According to a report from China Daily, a U.S. hospital recently fitted two individuals—a 60-year-old man named Han Sullivan and a 27-year-old veteran named Michelle—with this advanced bionic limb. The technology, created by Dr. Kuken, enables users to feel different sensations such as pressure, heat, and cold through the chest area, which acts as a sensory interface.

The bionic arm is equipped with pressure sensors that send signals to an inductive receiver implanted under the skin of the chest. These signals create a subtle tingling sensation, allowing users to "feel" objects through their chest. However, because the chest itself contains tactile nerve cells, there can be some overlap or interference between natural skin sensations and those from the bionic device. But with practice, users like Sullivan and Michelle can differentiate between the two by adjusting the pressure they apply.

Beyond basic touch, the system also allows users to detect temperature changes and even perceive pain. This is achieved by connecting the nerves at the amputation site to a group of chest muscles during surgery. These muscles then act as a relay station and amplifier for the electrical signals sent from the brain, enabling control of the robotic arm. The integration of the nervous system with the bionic limb represents a major leap forward in prosthetic technology, offering a more natural and intuitive user experience.

This innovation marks a significant step toward creating more responsive and human-like prosthetics, giving users a greater sense of connection to their artificial limbs. As research continues, it's likely that future versions will offer even more advanced sensory feedback and control capabilities. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association website
