One of the key advantages of Xanthoceras sorbifolia is its ability to produce both edible and diesel oils. The fruit contains 35–40% oil, while the seeds contain up to 72% oil. Its oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and free from erucic acid, making it safe and beneficial for human consumption. The oil is clear, flavorful, and has medicinal properties. Linoleic acid, found in the oil, is used in traditional Chinese medicine and has been shown to help lower blood pressure. Products such as "Yoshisou Ning" and linoleic acid dropping pills have been developed to manage hypertension and high cholesterol. As the global bio-industry continues to grow, using biodiesel and bioethanol from plants like Xanthoceras sorbifolia offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. During China’s “10th Five-Year Plan,†the Chinese Academy of Forestry promoted the use of woody fuel plants, including Xanthoceras sorbifolia, which has already seen successful diesel extraction.
Beyond oil production, the fruit can be consumed as a snack or used in cooking. It also has great potential as a raw material for various products. Additionally, the plant is considered a healthful fruit with multiple uses.
Xanthoceras sorbifolia is also a high-quality ornamental plant, valued for its beautiful foliage, fragrant flowers, and long blooming period of up to 30 days. Its wood is strong and aesthetically pleasing, suitable for crafts and activated carbon production. The plant has medicinal properties, and its leaves and branches are used to treat conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. Dried leaves can even be brewed into a tea-like beverage.
This hardy species is drought-resistant, thrives in poor soils, and has deep roots that make it ideal for soil and water conservation. It can grow in a wide range of environments, from plains to rocky areas, and can survive in extremely cold climates down to -41.4°C. Its adaptability and resilience make it a versatile and valuable plant.

This improved variety yields early and consistently, producing around 200 kg per crop and over 500 kg after five years. With proper care, mature trees can yield 20–30 kg annually, with some reaching 50 kg. At 40% oil content, this translates to over 2,000 kg of oil per mu (approximately 0.067 hectares), generating more than 5,000 yuan in revenue per mu. Planting density is about 110 trees per mu, with seedlings costing around 1.5 yuan each and new seeds selling at 16 yuan per jin (approx. 0.5 kg).
