Last week, an insightful lecture on environmental management for livable cities took place during the annual meeting of the Science and Technology Association. Dr. Li Wei, the executive director of the China Ecological Association, delivered a compelling and practical session that left the audience both informed and inspired. During her talk, Dr. Li highlighted some common yet overlooked issues in urban environments. She pointed out that many residents' windows are often covered in dust, and when the wind blows, it easily enters the homes, posing a risk to respiratory health. To address this, she advised citizens to clean their windows at least once a week, which can significantly reduce indoor air pollution. In addition, she emphasized the importance of proper lawn maintenance. "Green lawns should not be cut too short," she explained. "The green spaces along roads should not be raised above the ground level." She also suggested using gravel instead of concrete for parking lots, as it helps cool the area and reduces dust. According to Dr. Li, well-maintained grass can effectively trap dust and improve air quality. However, in many cities, lawns are often cut too short, which not only reduces their ability to collect dust but also increases water evaporation, leading to unnecessary water waste. Another issue she addressed was the way green belts are designed along city roads. In many cases, these green areas are built higher than the road surface, creating a barrier that prevents water from properly soaking into the soil. This design, she said, is counterproductive as it hinders the natural absorption of rainwater and limits the effectiveness of the green spaces in reducing dust and improving air quality. Dr. Li’s speech was not only informative but also a call to action for city planners, residents, and environmentalists to work together in creating healthier and more sustainable urban environments. Her insights reminded everyone that small, everyday actions—like cleaning windows or maintaining lawns—can have a big impact on the overall quality of life in a city.
