In order to ensure successful eucalyptus cultivation, the selection of a suitable location is crucial. It's recommended to choose a deep sandy loam soil that is slightly shaded and sheltered, ideally in a rice paddy field. After plowing during the winter, the soil should be lightly tilled and exposed to sunlight. Before sowing, it’s best to perform three plows in early winter and two plows in early spring. Apply 1.5 to 2 tons of manure per acre or 25 to 50 kilograms of cake fertilizer as a base fertilizer to enrich the soil. Sowing should be done during the “Rain” to “Convulsions” period, which refers to the ideal time when the weather is moist and warm, ensuring good germination conditions. Before planting, seeds should be disinfected by soaking them in a 0.2‰ potassium permanganate solution for about 2 hours. Due to their long germination period, eucalyptus seeds typically start sprouting 40–50 days after sowing and continue for up to 50–60 days, resulting in a very uniform emergence. To speed up germination, soak the seeds in warm water at 50°C for 3–4 times before sowing. For sowing, prepare the soil by making shallow furrows with a row spacing of 20–25 cm, using 10–12.5 kg of seeds per mu. After sowing, cover the seeds with a layer of humus or ash, approximately 1.5 cm thick, and then place straw on top to protect the seeds from direct sunlight and retain moisture. Once the seedlings emerge, thinning should begin when they have 3–5 true leaves, aiming for 15–20 seedlings per square meter, which translates to around 20,000–30,000 seedlings per acre. Banyan trees (often confused with eucalyptus in this context) have long taproots and sparse lateral roots, which can affect transplant success. To encourage lateral root development, when the seedlings have 3–5 true leaves, use a sharp iron spatula to cut into both sides of the seedling at a 45-degree angle, about 5–6 cm deep, to trim the main root. Then water thoroughly to stimulate lateral root growth. From May to June, seedlings experience their peak growth phase. Applying a balanced, fast-acting fertilizer during this time can significantly boost their development. Once the seedlings reach a height of 50–70 cm, they are ready for transplanting, preferably during the rainy season in winter or spring. This ensures better survival rates and stronger establishment in the new location.
