In recent months, the government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region convened a meeting to review grape production in the region from one year ago. The discussion focused on shaping the future direction of the "one-year, two-income" grape industry, with ambitious goals to expand the grape orchard area to 300,000 mu and increase annual production to 500,000 tons within five years. This represents a 50% rise in area and a 1.5-fold increase in production, aiming to establish Guangxi as a national winter grape production hub.
To achieve this, the agricultural research and extension departments in Guangxi have developed and refined the "two harvests per year" grape technology. By leveraging Guangxi’s unique climate conditions, they’ve integrated advanced techniques such as breaking dormancy, precipitation control, and rain protection. These innovations not only allow early maturation of grapes, reducing the impact of high temperatures and humidity during the summer, but also enable a second harvest during the autumn and winter seasons. This results in two distinct grape crops that don’t overlap with those from other regions, giving Guangxi a competitive edge.
Notably, the second harvest of high-quality grapes is available in the market during the colder months, filling a seasonal gap and generating significant economic returns. According to data from the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, test farms have shown that the combined value of two harvests can exceed 30,000 yuan per hectare, with net income surpassing 25,000 yuan.
The success of the "two-income" model has spurred rapid growth in Guangxi's grape industry. Annual output has surged from 40,000 tons at the end of the last century to 170,000 tons today, making grapes one of the top ten fruits in the region. It is projected that this year’s grape output will reach 200,000 tons, transforming Guangxi from a traditional grape-growing area into a new and competitive production center.
At a recent field meeting, Vice Chairman Chen Zhangliang emphasized the importance of enhancing scientific research and technical training across the region. He called for collaboration in promoting "three avoidance" technologies, pollution-free standardization methods, and ecological farming practices to improve product quality and safety. Additionally, he urged the development of large-scale operations for dual-harvest grape production and the continued expansion of the industrial chain to ensure long-term sustainability and growth.
