In recent months, the Guangxi Autonomous Region government convened a meeting to review grape production data from one year prior and outlined a strategic plan for the "one year, two incomes" grape industry. The goal is to expand the grape orchard area to 300,000 mu and increase annual production to 500,000 tons within five years—representing a 50% and 1.5-fold growth respectively. This initiative aims to establish Guangxi as a national hub for winter grape production.
To achieve this, the region's agricultural research and extension departments have developed and refined the "two harvests in one year" grape technology. By leveraging Guangxi’s unique climate conditions, they’ve implemented advanced techniques such as stress-breaking, precipitation control, and rain protection. These innovations have enabled earlier maturation of summer grapes, reducing the impact of high temperatures and humidity. Additionally, the use of favorable autumn and winter weather has allowed for a second grape harvest, creating a staggered production cycle that differentiates Guangxi from other regions.
The second harvest, particularly during colder months, has brought high-quality grapes to the market at a time when supply is typically low, leading to significant economic returns. According to field trials conducted by the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the combined value of two harvests exceeded 30,000 yuan per acre, with net income surpassing 25,000 yuan annually.
This "two-income" model has driven rapid growth in Guangxi’s grape industry. Total annual output has surged from 40,000 tons at the end of the last century to 170,000 tons today, making grapes one of the top ten fruits in the region. This year, the region expects to produce over 200,000 tons, transforming Guangxi from a traditional grape-growing area into a key production hub.
At a recent production meeting, Vice Chairman Chen Zhangliang emphasized the need for enhanced scientific research and technical training across the region. He urged collaboration on "three avoidance" technologies, pollution-free standardization methods, and ecological farming practices to improve both quality and safety. Furthermore, he called for the expansion of large-scale dual-harvest operations and the continued development of the grape industry chain.
