The fruit coloring of Red Fuji apples starts earlier than that of Guo Guang, but the process is slower. Color development typically begins in late August, and by mid-September, the coloration does not progress as quickly as it does in Guo Guang. To enhance the coloration of Red Fuji apples, several effective measures can be taken starting in early September, alongside regular tasks like pruning and pest control. First, managing nitrogen levels is essential. Stop applying additional nitrogen fertilizers after September and implement a scientific irrigation schedule using frequent, shallow watering to maintain stable soil and air temperatures. This helps promote even color development. Second, leaf thinning can improve light exposure. Remove one or two shaded, older leaves above the apples to increase direct sunlight absorption, which enhances coloration. Third, foliar sprays can significantly improve fruit color. Spraying 500 ppm of rare earth elements on the canopy has been shown to increase the red fruit ratio by 12%, boost anthocyanin content by 1–3 times, raise fruit weight by 6%, and increase yield by 15%. Additionally, spraying ethephon at concentrations below 1000 ppm or potassium dihydrogen phosphate at 5000 ppm also shows positive effects on fruit color. Fourth, mulching with reflective films between tree rows and between plants increases the intensity of reflected light, which improves coloration on the top of the fruit and the calyx area. It also raises the sugar content by 1–2 degrees. Fifth, protecting the root system is important. Avoid cutting or damaging shallow roots during the coloring period, as this can interfere with the production of cytokinins and reduce fruit sugar levels. Lastly, timing the harvest is crucial. Harvesting too early results in poor coloration and lower quality. Red Fuji apples are generally ready for harvest 175 to 180 days after bloom. The later you harvest, the greater the day-night temperature difference, which promotes better coloring. Therefore, it’s best to delay the harvest as much as possible without compromising fruit quality.
