Microbial fertilizers have become an important part of modern agriculture, offering a natural and eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers. However, the market is currently flooded with various products, making it difficult for farmers to choose the right one. So far, only 400 types of microbial fertilizers have been officially approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, while over 2,000 different products are actually being produced. With such a large number of options available, it's crucial for farmers to be cautious and informed when selecting and using these products. First and foremost, never purchase or use any microbial fertilizer that does not have a valid registration certificate from the Ministry of Agriculture. These products must undergo rigorous testing by designated agricultural institutions and field trials to ensure their safety, effectiveness, and environmental compatibility. A provisional registration certificate is issued first, followed by a formal one after three years of practical application. The official certificate is valid for five years. Products without proper certification may not meet quality standards and could potentially harm crops or soil health. Another key consideration is the number of viable microorganisms in the product. According to national standards, the concentration of live bacteria should be at least 200 million per gram (or 100 million for particle-based formulations). For compound microbial fertilizers and bio-organic fertilizers, the effective microbial cell count should be no less than 2,000 million per gram. If a product fails to meet these criteria, it may not deliver the expected benefits and could be of poor quality. Additionally, it's important to pay attention to the shelf life of microbial fertilizers. In China, most products are effective for at least one year under proper storage conditions. Therefore, it's recommended to use them as soon as possible after purchase. Expired products may lose potency, reducing their effectiveness and potentially leading to unsatisfactory results. Lastly, always follow the storage instructions and application methods provided by the manufacturer. Microbial fertilizers contain live organisms that are sensitive to extreme temperatures, strong sunlight, and high acidity or alkalinity. They should not be mixed with certain chemical fertilizers or fungicides, as this can kill the beneficial microbes. Proper handling and storage are essential to maintain the viability and performance of the product. By taking these precautions, farmers can make more informed decisions and maximize the benefits of using microbial fertilizers in their farming practices.
