Dongfeng snail, scientifically known as *Eupleurotoma orientalis*, is also commonly referred to as small wind snail, sea snail, or simply snail. It belongs to the family of gastropods and is a type of new gastropod. This species primarily feeds on fish, shrimp, and shellfish, and thrives in sandy or muddy substrates, as well as among rocks. Usually, it remains buried in the sand layer, only emerging to feed. Due to its fast growth, high adaptability, strong disease resistance, and high survival rate, it is very suitable for aquaculture along the coastal areas of Hainan Province. Below is an introduction to the factory farming technology used in cultivating Dongfeng snails. First, when setting up a breeding base, it is essential to select a clean seawater source with a salinity of at least 1.016 throughout the year, preferably above 1.020. The water should be clear, with good flow, and convenient access to fresh seawater. The culture pools are designed to be 6 meters long, 3 meters wide, and 1 meter deep. Each pool has water inlet pipes and air diffusers at both ends. Two polyethylene ropes are stretched between the walls to help fix the aeration system. At the bottom of the pool, there are 9 to 12 air pipes, each 1.5 to 2.0 meters long. The floor is sloped toward the outlet. A wooden plank layer, about 6 cm in size, is laid first, followed by an 80- to 100-mesh sieve. Then, the area is disinfected with potassium permanganate, and a 6–8 cm thick layer of sand is added. Shade nets are installed 3 meters above the ground, covering the entire pond to provide adequate shade. For seed stocking, the pond is first cleaned with a high-pressure water gun and then disinfected with potassium permanganate. After rinsing twice with seawater, the pond is filled with 50 to 80 cm of water, maintaining a salinity of 1.018 to 1.022, a temperature of 25 to 30°C, and a pH of 8.1 to 8.5. Healthy seedlings, smooth in shape, free of debris, soft and plump, with shell lengths of 0.6 to 1 cm, are selected. Stocking density is around 11,000 to 16,000 per pond, or 700 to 1,000 per square meter. During cultivation, seedlings may climb the walls in the first few days due to environmental stress. Regular monitoring is required to return them to the water. Feeding begins two days after stocking, using small pieces of fish such as light fish, tilapia, and trash fish. The feeding amount is 7% to 10% of the snail weight, depending on factors like water temperature and quality. Feeding is done once or twice daily, typically at 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Micro-fluidized water systems are used, with water flow reaching 3 to 5 times the volume of the pond daily. Water is changed every 3 to 4 days, and the sand is flushed and replaced every 40 to 50 days. Dissolved oxygen levels must remain above 3 mg/l, and the pH should stay between 7.5 and 8.5. Disease prevention includes regular use of photosynthetic bacteria, periodic sand changes, and removal of leftover bait. Antibiotics like norfloxacin (0.55 mg/L), virus ling (0.55 mg/L), and banyan (0.3 mg/L) are alternated every two weeks. Harvesting occurs after approximately five months, when snails reach marketable sizes of 120 to 200 grams per kilogram. The current market price is about 68 yuan per 500 grams. On average, each pond can yield 110 kg, with a survival rate of 96%, generating an output value of 14,960 yuan. After deducting farming costs of 70 yuan/kg, the net profit is 7,260 yuan, or about 403 yuan per square meter. In summary, Dongfeng snail has rapid growth, high productivity, and wide adaptability, making it suitable for various aquaculture systems, including cement pools, sea farms, and shrimp ponds. With favorable climate conditions in Hainan, it can be farmed for two years, offering great potential for development. Recently, due to diseases in white shrimp farming, many farmers have shifted to cultivating Dongfeng snails. Although large-scale production techniques are now mature, challenges remain, such as high costs and limited availability of natural feed. To promote further growth, research into artificial compound feed is crucial. If these issues are addressed, Dongfeng snail farming could become a promising industry in coastal regions.
