China and Australia have launched a collaborative initiative known as the "Craniofacial Regeneration Plan," aimed at addressing a wide range of craniofacial deformities, including conditions like facial asymmetry, "goldfish eye" appearance, increased intermalar distance, congenital facial abnormalities, and deformities resulting from accidents, trauma, or tumors. Craniomaxillofacial plastic surgery plays a crucial role in restoring facial structure and function. Recently, a three-year "Craniofacial Regeneration Program" was initiated at the Ninth People’s Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. As part of this program, over 100 Chinese surgeons received specialized training from the Australian Craniofacial Surgery Center. The program also aims to provide surgical treatment for children with complex craniofacial conditions.

According to statistics, approximately 100,000 children are born each year with congenital craniofacial deformities across China. There are more than 20 types of such malformations, with incidence rates ranging from 1 per thousand to 1 per 100,000. Surgical intervention is the only effective treatment, but it carries significant risks. Currently, only two or three specialized centers in China are equipped to perform these surgeries, and there are fewer than 10 senior experts in the field. Children who do not receive timely treatment often face severe social challenges, mental health issues, and difficulties in eating, speaking, or hearing. In some cases, these conditions can be so debilitating that children may lose hope before reaching puberty. Additionally, the cost of craniofacial surgery ranges from 50,000 to 100,000 yuan, making it unaffordable for many families in rural areas.

In response to the limited availability of craniofacial surgery in China, the three-year "Craniofacial Regeneration Plan" will be led by experienced surgeons from both China and Australia, based at the Ninth People’s Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The initiative aims to train and establish several craniofacial surgery centers capable of performing high-quality procedures independently, thus advancing the overall development of craniofacial treatment in the country.

Since 1975, the Australian Craniofacial Surgery Center, under the leadership of Professor David, has been actively involved in physician training and treating patients in need across the Asia-Pacific region. This collaboration has extended to the Ninth People's Hospital, where renowned Chinese academician Zhang Disheng is based. The two institutions have maintained a strong partnership for over two decades. To date, the hospital has completed more than 1,000 craniofacial surgeries, achieving a success rate of 95.7%, which places it at the forefront of international craniofacial surgery.
