Microbial fertilizers have become an important part of modern agriculture, offering a natural and sustainable way to improve soil health and crop yield. However, with over 2,000 microbial fertilizer products currently on the market, it's essential for farmers to be cautious and informed when choosing and applying these products. Only 400 types have been officially approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, which highlights the importance of selecting reliable and certified options.
First and foremost, never purchase or use any microbial fertilizer that does not have a valid registration certificate from the Ministry of Agriculture. These products must undergo rigorous testing by designated institutions, including field trials, to ensure their safety, effectiveness, and quality. Initially, they are issued a provisional registration certificate, and after three years of practical application, they may receive a formal one, which is valid for five years. Products without proper certification may lack quality control and could potentially harm crops or the environment.
Another critical factor to consider is the number of viable bacteria in the product. According to national standards, the concentration should be at least 200 million per gram (or 100 million for particle-based formulas). For compound microbial fertilizers and bio-organic fertilizers, the number of effective microbial cells should be no less than 2,000 million per gram. If the product fails to meet these requirements, it may not deliver the expected benefits and could be considered substandard.
Additionally, it’s important to check the shelf life of the product. In China, most microbial fertilizers are effective for at least one year under proper storage conditions. If the product has exceeded its expiration date, its efficacy may be significantly reduced. Therefore, it’s recommended to use the product as soon as possible after purchase to ensure maximum effectiveness.
Lastly, always follow the storage and application instructions carefully. Microbial fertilizers contain live microorganisms that are sensitive to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, strong acids or bases, and certain chemical fertilizers or fungicides. Improper handling can reduce the viability of the microbes and diminish the product's performance. It's crucial to store and apply them according to the manufacturer's guidelines to maintain their quality and function.
By being mindful of these factors, farmers can make better-informed decisions and ensure that they are using safe, effective, and high-quality microbial fertilizers. As Zuo Guangsheng once emphasized, the right choice of fertilizers can greatly contribute to sustainable agricultural development.
