The issue of residual plastic film in agricultural fields has long been a challenge for farmers and workers. To tackle this, various methods such as photolysis membranes, manual removal, and mechanical picking have been used to clean up the leftover plastic, aiming to minimize white pollution. While the top 5 cm of soil is usually thoroughly cleaned, the process remains labor-intensive and time-consuming for many staff members.
To address this problem more efficiently and support sustainable agricultural development, Red Star purchased five surface film recycling machines from Xinjiang Tianjiao Bioengineering Company. According to Li Xueyi, the general manager of the company, the machine has undergone four years of research and development. It weighs around 600 kilograms, is small and four-wheel driven, and can cover 250–300 acres per day. The machine is designed to collect residual film within 0–3 cm of the soil surface, achieving a recovery rate of over 80%.
During a 14-day demonstration session at Red Star, reporters observed leaders, technicians, and operators testing and discussing the performance of the surface film recycling machine before planting. After the machine was operated on the field, the surface appeared clean, which was met with positive feedback. However, participants also shared their thoughts on possible improvements.
Nong Xun Shi Xinghong, a second deputy acting commander, and technician Tang Hua noted that the machine effectively recovered small residual films on the surface. "Today’s meeting showed that the machine performs well in picking up residual film," they said. "It can even collect small pieces of plastic that are hard to see, which is very helpful for maintaining clean farmland."
