The exhibition will open on November 28 and last until December 3, which is expected to attract 60,000 people. Activities include lectures, exhibitions, opportunities to meet peers and preview the latest medical device innovations.
After years of downturn, 2010 will be a strong year for medical display sales. The financial crisis of 2008 and 2009 caused customers and the retail and housing markets to face the same credit problems, thus suppressing many of the potential needs of this emerging market. However, as medical institutions receive funding, equipment manufacturers are welcoming demand for the medical device industry, and demand for displays has increased.
A high-performance diagnostic display for Image Archiving Communication Systems (PACS) represents one of the market opportunities with the highest revenue per inch in today's liquid crystal display (LCD) market. While color is becoming an increasingly important diagnostic tool, the market's performance standards have long been the grayscale image quality of displays, emphasizing the black and white film that digital displays initially display. Although grayscale performance is still a key indicator, high-brightness color displays are now said to have acceptable grayscale performance, and will replace grayscale displays after 2012, becoming the primary monitor for diagnosing PACS.
The economic situation has affected this shift, and customers considering increased purchasing power are attracted by the flexibility of color displays with DICOM standard grayscale performance. The 30-inch model with Chi Mei's 10 megapixel grayscale panel was first exhibited at the 2008 RSNA Annual Meeting and is currently scheduled for production in 2011.
The 30-inch 10 million-image display allows users to view two 5 megapixel images side by side on a single glass panel without borders and seams. However, after the screen area increases, the price may be higher than the dual monitor 5 megapixel solution, and the panel supply may be limited in 2011. Therefore, its prospects remain to be seen, as the initial production yield of this panel is expected to be low and the panel cost will be correspondingly higher.
