The University of Hong Kong uses ultrasound technology to diagnose tongue cancer
The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong found that the use of ultrasound technology instead of magnetic resonance sketch examination to diagnose the location of tongue cancer tumors may exempt patients from surgery. This method has the same effect as the magnetic resonance check, but it takes less time and is cheaper. Yuan Baorong, a professor of otolaryngology at the Department of Surgery at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, said that although the medical community knows that 30 to 40% of tongue cancer cells have a risk of metastasis to lymph nodes, today's medical technology still cannot be accurately detected. As a precaution, the doctor will recommend a preventive neck dissection, which removes the cervical lymph nodes and thyroid gland, but in fact, six to seventy percent of the patients do not need surgery.
From September 2001 to June 2006, the University of Hong Kong conducted a study on 45 patients with one to three stages of tongue cancer. It was found that ultrasound technology can be used to measure the thickness of tongue cancer tumors. The accuracy rate is as high as 95%. More than 3 mm, patients can be exempted from neck dissection. Yuan Baorong said that magnetic resonance testing takes thousands of Hong Kong dollars and hours, but oral ultrasound diagnosis only costs about 500 Hong Kong dollars and 5 minutes. At present, Mary Hospital has extensively used oral ultrasound diagnosis, and patients can decide whether to accept a risky neck dissection according to the thickness of the tumor. According to Hong Kong media reports, there are about 130 new cases of tongue cancer in Hong Kong each year, ranging from 10 to 80 years old. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association website
