English Name: Charybdis (Charybdis) natator
Common Name: Shan Swishi

The Charybdis natator, commonly known as the Shan Swishi, is a species of swimming crab that belongs to the family Portunidae. It is native to various regions across the Indo-Pacific, including China (specifically Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, and Taiwan), as well as Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Madagascar, and East Africa. These crabs are typically found in sandy or muddy seabed environments, where they can burrow and hide from predators.

One of the distinguishing features of this crab is its head thorax, which is elevated and densely covered with fine hairs. The surface of the head thorax near the base of the front teeth is particularly textured. At the back of the cephalothorax, there are granular ridges of varying lengths, adding to the crab’s rugged appearance.

The front teeth of the Shan Swishi are arranged in a unique pattern: there are six teeth in total, with the central four being similar in size. The leading edge of these teeth is blunt, while the second to fourth teeth have sharp tips. The last tooth is slightly punctured, giving the mouth a distinctive look. Both the trailing and posterior edges of the front teeth are lined with granular ridges, enhancing the crab’s overall texture.

The chelipeds (claw legs) of the Shan Swishi are robust and unequal in size, which is typical for many swimming crabs. The surfaces of the wrist and palm joints feature flattened particles, while the back of the palm segment has five spines. These spines are flanked by particles that are neatly arranged in columns, contributing to the crab's structural complexity.

In terms of coloration, the head and thorax of the Shan Swishi are primarily brown with red mottling, and the cheeks are usually bright red, making it a visually striking species. This coloration may help in camouflage or communication within its habitat.

The male specimen of this species has a head thorax that measures approximately 69.0 millimeters in length and 103.0 millimeters in width, making it one of the larger members of its genus. Its size and robust build make it well-suited for its marine environment, where it actively moves and hunts for food.
