Soybean borer is a significant pest that affects soybean crops during the pod blasting stage. The larvae feed on the grains, causing damage that can reduce both yield and quality. On average, the infestation rate ranges from 5% to 10%, but in severe cases, it can reach up to 50%. Timely preventive measures are essential to minimize losses.
The best time for prevention is between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., when there's a sudden increase in moth activity in the field, often accompanied by swarming or disturbances. This period marks the peak of the insect’s life cycle, making it ideal for control efforts.
For biological control, one effective method is the release of *Trichogramma* wasps. These natural predators target the eggs of the borer. It's recommended to release 20,000 to 30,000 *Trichogramma* per acre at the peak of egg-laying, which can reduce the infestation rate by approximately 40%. Another option is the application of *Beauveria bassiana*, a fungal biopesticide. Apply 1.5 kg per mu (approximately 0.67 acres) before the larvae begin to move, as this helps to infect and kill them effectively.
Chemical control methods are also commonly used. One approach is fumigation with dichlorvos. Mix 100–150 ml of 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate per acre. Soak two long sorghum or corn stalks, leaving part of the outer layer intact. Insert these into the rows every 5–6 meters, ensuring even distribution across the field. Alternatively, a foliar spray can be applied using 12.5% deltamethrin EC at a rate of 50 kg of water per acre, or 5% Fortune Chrysanthemum EC mixed with 50 kg of water. These sprays should be applied evenly over the crop to ensure maximum effectiveness.
By combining these strategies—biological and chemical controls—farmers can significantly reduce the impact of soybean borers and protect their crops from substantial damage. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are key to successful pest management.
