Morphological Characteristics:
Cixiangui is an evergreen shrub or small tree, with the model specimen currently preserved in Dongxi Township, Cangxi County. The tree is approximately 100 years old, standing about 6 meters tall, with a trunk diameter of 22 centimeters and a crown spread of 5.8 meters. It is currently growing at a moderate rate.
The plant has a spherical to ellipsoidal shape, with densely branched structure. Its bark is light gray, featuring small, round or elliptical lenticels that are sparsely distributed. The average branching force of standard plants is 2.6, and the average length of spring shoots reaches 16.3 cm. The leaves are green to dark green, leathery, and slightly glossy. In early spring, the leaves are broad, obovate or oblanceolate with entire margins. Later in the season, the leaves become longer, oblong, with sparse serrations on the upper and middle parts. The leaf surface is flat, averaging 9.9 cm in length and 3.5 cm in width. The leaf margins exhibit a wavy pattern and are slightly rolled inward. There are 10 to 12 pairs of lateral veins, which are neatly arranged. The leaf tip is short and blunt, while the base is wedge-shaped or broadly wedge-shaped.
Flowering occurs in cymes during the initial and final stages, and during the central flowering period, it forms panicles with prominent peduncles. The corolla is light yellow to lemon yellow, flat, and slightly curved. The corolla lobes are elliptical and deeply divided, with a dense floral structure.
Ecological Habits:
Cixiangui exhibits strong adaptability and resilience to environmental stress. It thrives in neutral or acidic soils rich in organic matter and prefers a cool, moist microclimate with some cold tolerance. Germination typically occurs earlier each year. In northern China, potted plants can bloom normally, while in the Qinling Mountains and areas south of the Huaihe River, it can survive the winter outdoors. In warmer regions such as Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan, it can flower throughout the year.
Each new shoot of Japanese Xianggui typically bears three to four pairs of leaves, with two to three pairs of stacked axillary buds per leaf. Other fresh shoots usually have only two to three shoots per new growth. Each leaf blade contains one to two pairs of solitary or clustered axillary buds, providing a solid foundation for its high flowering potential. The total flowering period can exceed 200 days, and this variety is known as Xiangxiang Guiri Xianggui Shrub Ball, with a ground diameter of 5 cm and a height ranging from 50 to 100 cm.
Use Value:
Cixiangui is a premium ornamental tree species, valued for its beauty, fragrance, and vibrant color. It can be cultivated into a graceful, globular tree or thick, spherical shrubs. It is also suitable for potting or used in floral arrangements to add greenery to living spaces. The combination of its ornamental and practical value makes its overall economic value more than double that of other sweet osmanthus products.
In addition to the value of the seedlings themselves, a single mu (approximately 667 square meters) of Japanese osmanthus can produce 300 kilograms of flowers annually, worth around 3,000 yuan. When processed into essential oils, the added value increases significantly. The oil extraction rate of Rixiangui is over 1 times higher than that of other sweet osmanthus varieties. With an extraction volume of 0.5 kg per mu, it can be worth up to 10,000 yuan. Combined, the direct economic value of planting 1 mu of Xianggui can exceed 20,000 yuan. Moreover, the tourism value of Japanese fragrant osmanthus adds further benefits, making it a highly valuable species.
The planting and utilization of Japanese osmanthus offer many advantages. It has a well-developed root system, grows quickly, and maintains green foliage year-round, offering excellent ornamental value. Additionally, its long flowering period and beautiful appearance make it ideal for major festivals like Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day, New Year’s Day, and the Spring Festival, when it continues to bloom and emit a strong fragrance, marking it as a rare evergreen flowering tree.
Rixiangui has broken through the common perception that "fragrant osmanthus is not diligent" and "open-ground osmanthus is not fragrant," becoming a famous osmanthus species in China. This may be the main reason why the Xiangxiong series seedlings remain popular and consistently in demand.
Sweet osmanthus seedlings can be potted or planted. However, large-scale cultivation typically involves planting in open fields. They prefer full sun, but can tolerate partial shade. They thrive in moist conditions and are resistant to both heat and cold, making them suitable for planting in areas with ample sunlight.
