The best time for prevention and control is between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., when there is a sudden increase in moth activity in the field, often accompanied by swarming or disturbances. This period indicates that the pests are actively laying eggs, making it an ideal window for intervention.
For biological control, one effective method is releasing *Trichogramma* wasps at the peak of egg-laying. A typical release rate is 20,000 to 30,000 per acre, which can reduce the insect infestation rate by approximately 40%. Another option is applying *Beauveria bassiana*, a fungus that infects and kills larvae. Apply 1.5 kg per mu (about 0.67 acres) before the larvae disperse, using a concentration of 2.5 billion spores per gram.
Chemical control methods are also commonly used. One approach is fumigation with dichlorvos. Mix 100–150 ml of 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate per acre, then soak two long sorghum or corn stalks—peel one end and leave the other intact. Insert these into the rows every 5 to 6 meters to ensure even distribution. Another method involves spraying the field with either 12.5% deltamethrin EC at a rate of 50 kg of water per acre, or 5% Fortune Chrysanthemum EC, also diluted in 50 kg of water. These sprays should be applied thoroughly to target both adult moths and emerging larvae.
By combining these strategies, farmers can effectively manage soybean borer populations and protect their crops from serious damage. Regular monitoring and timely action are key to successful pest management.
