As a military family, we’ve grown accustomed to relocating frequently. While I enjoy being organized and rely on checklists to make moving smoother, today I want to share my top two tips that can truly simplify the moving process itself. These are strategies that have worked wonders for us over multiple relocations, and I hope they help you too!
#1 PURGE!
One of the most important steps before a move is decluttering. I know it’s tempting to tell yourself you'll sort through everything once you're unpacked, but trust me—it’s far easier to tackle this task ahead of time. Whether you’re moving next door or across the country, unpacking can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re pressed for time. You might end up shoving things into closets without giving them proper attention, only to realize later that you've kept items you never really needed. Purging beforehand ensures you start fresh in your new space and avoids unnecessary clutter.
#2 BAG IT!
This tip may sound unusual, but it’s become an absolute lifesaver for us after four moves. Before the movers arrive, take the time to bag and label every drawer—nightstand drawers, kitchen utensils, bathroom supplies, you name it! Using two-gallon Ziploc bags, carefully place the contents of each drawer inside, then clearly label the bags. This method works wonders whether you're hiring professional movers or handling the packing yourself. When we first started doing this, we were constantly frustrated by unpacking boxes marked "Living Room" and finding miscellaneous items like pens, cords, and remote controls. It always took ages to figure out where everything belonged.
There are three major benefits to this approach. First, it forces you to declutter drawers that might otherwise be overlooked, like kitchen utensils or bathroom supplies. Physically placing items in a bag helps you decide what to keep and what to let go of. Second, it makes unpacking significantly faster and less stressful. Once you arrive at your new home, you can simply drop the labeled bags into their respective drawers without wasting time sorting through individual pieces. Third, if you’re using professional movers, this system prevents them from overpacking drawers with excessive amounts of paper. On our first move, we discovered a massive box labeled "Kitchen," expecting it to hold large appliances. Instead, it contained every single utensil from our drawer, each wrapped in its own sheet of paper. Unwrapping everything took hours!
Of course, there are exceptions. I always leave breakable items outside the bags but still within the drawer so that the movers can handle them properly. They know how to pack delicate objects safely, while I handle the rest.
So, do you have any tried-and-true moving tips? I’d love to hear from others who have faced similar challenges!
