After the summer solstice, the true heat of summer began. In the southern regions, rabbit breeding entered a period of slowdown. Most rabbits stopped reproducing during this time. Over these nearly two months, besides focusing on preventing heatstroke and keeping the environment cool, it's also a great opportunity to take some time to conduct a thorough review and adjustment of the current rabbit population. Since the older female rabbits in my farm are still easy to sell (often fetching over 20 yuan), I make it a practice to cull one-third of the females each year. The following conditions lead to the elimination of rabbits: First, chronic respiratory issues such as persistent sneezing, nasal discharge (clear or pus-like) are common in large-scale rabbit farms. These slow-progressing diseases are hard to fully cure, even with all the methods I’ve tried. Most of the solutions only help ease symptoms, not eliminate the root cause. To avoid wasting time, effort, and resources, and to prevent the spread of infection, I choose to cull these rabbits. Second, poor reproductive performance is another reason for elimination. This includes three consecutive breedings without any successful mating, two consecutive litters with fewer than five offspring, or two weaning cycles where less than five kits survive. Other signs include chronic uterine inflammation with purulent discharge, mastitis, or blocked nipples (more than two affected). If a rabbit fails to give birth in the farrowing box or requires forced feeding without an obvious cause, it’s considered unfit for breeding. Additionally, female rabbits over 2.5 years old are culled unless they show exceptional traits. Fourth, physical deformities such as crooked or octagonal feet are also reasons for elimination. All these decisions are based on careful daily observation and detailed record-keeping. Without consistent monitoring, it's easy to miss early warning signs that could affect the overall health and productivity of the herd. Taking the time to evaluate and cull regularly helps maintain a strong, healthy, and efficient breeding population.
