First, one of the main reasons for litchi blossoms is the over-shortening of flower spikes due to improper pruning or chemical treatments. In many litchi orchards, farmers manually remove the first batch of flower spikes or use chemicals to kill them, aiming to encourage a second flush of flowering. While this method can increase the number of female flowers and improve fruit setting, it often leads to issues if not done properly. Overuse of chemicals can result in very short and clustered flower spikes (about 3–8 cm), which are difficult to ventilate and light through. As a result, these spikes are highly susceptible to damage during rainy weather, leading to blossom drop and poor fruit development.
Another cause is excessive removal of flower buds, leaving only a small cluster at the top. This creates dense, compact spikes that are prone to blossom problems. Additionally, failure to shake off burnt flowers during rainy periods can contribute to litchi blossoms, as moisture accumulation can lead to rot and disease.
To prevent litchi blossoms, two key strategies should be implemented. First, after the initial pruning or chemical treatment, it's crucial to thin out the second batch of emerging flower spikes promptly. During this process, care must be taken to avoid creating clustered, short spikes. Instead, maintain a balanced and open structure to promote airflow and sunlight penetration. Second, during rainy periods, shaking the branches regularly helps remove burnt or damaged flowers, preventing them from causing rot on the entire inflorescence and reducing the risk of frost damage.
If litchi blossoms do occur, quick action is necessary. Remove any fallen or damaged flowers to prevent them from causing rot among healthy ones. If the flower spikes are too dense, consider using water sprays to help dry them out and improve air circulation. In severe cases, trim the spent flowers and perform light thinning, while applying foliar fertilizer to support plant recovery. Within about 10 days, a new batch of flower spikes should emerge, with a higher proportion of female flowers and improved fruit-setting rates.
By understanding and addressing the causes of litchi blossoms early, growers can significantly improve the quality and yield of their litchi crops. Proper pruning techniques, timely intervention during bad weather, and careful post-blossom management are all critical steps in maintaining healthy litchi trees.
