Snapdragon, also known as the "leading flower" or "ocean color finches," is a popular ornamental plant belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family. It's commonly referred to as goldfish grass and is widely used in potted plants and landscape flower beds due to its vibrant colors—ranging from pink, purple, yellow, to white—and its ability to bloom throughout the year. To successfully grow snapdragon, it's essential to follow these key care tips.
First, sowing should be done at the right time. The best method is direct sowing, typically in mid-September. Use sterilized humus soil or peat-based mix in shallow containers with a diameter of around 30 cm. Fill the pots with soil, leaving about 1–2 cm of space at the top. Gently press the soil down before sowing the seeds. Cover them lightly with fine soil and use a wooden board to compact the surface so that the seeds make good contact with the soil. Place the pots in a tray filled with water, allowing moisture to rise from the bottom until the soil is evenly damp. Then, cover the pots with glass to reduce evaporation and place them in a shaded area.
After sowing, proper watering is crucial. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. At night, remove the glass to allow for ventilation, and replace it during the day to prevent excessive drying. Seedlings usually emerge within 7 to 8 days. Once they appear, remove the glass to expose them to light.
When the seedlings have developed 4 to 5 true leaves, transplant them into pots with a diameter of 8 to 12 cm. Mix 7 parts humus soil with 3 parts garden soil for the potting mix. Water thoroughly using a watering can. As the plants grow, gradually move them into larger pots, eventually planting them in containers with a diameter of 20 to 24 cm.
Snapdragons are cold-tolerant and can survive temperatures above -5°C. They prefer partial shade and are fairly drought-resistant. During care, water according to the "see dry, see wet" principle. Mist the plants every two days to maintain humidity.
Fertilization should be balanced, focusing on phosphorus and potassium rather than nitrogen, as snapdragons naturally fix nitrogen through their rhizobia. Apply a 1–2% solution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate when flower buds appear, every two weeks. Before each fertilization, remove weeds to ensure the plants receive adequate nutrients.
Pruning is important for healthy growth. When seedlings reach about 10 cm, pinch back the growing tip to encourage bushier growth and more flowers. Remove weak, dry, or overcrowded branches regularly. After each bloom, cut back the spent flowers to promote new growth and prolong flowering.
By following these steps, you can enjoy beautiful, long-blooming snapdragons that enhance both indoor and outdoor spaces. With proper care, they will thrive and bring color to your garden all year round.
