Nine mature wax gourds, each with a section of fruit stem attached, should be handled carefully to avoid external mechanical damage and vibrations that could cause internal bruising from rolling. Wax gourds are typically stored in cellars, but they can also be kept in empty rooms as long as the environment is warm and dry. The ideal storage conditions are around 10°C with a relative humidity of 70% to 75%. To maintain quality during storage, the ground is often covered with fine sand and wheat straw, and the gourds are stacked in 2 to 3 layers. Alternatively, they can be placed on vegetable racks for better air circulation. There’s an old saying among farmers: “The longer it stays in the ground, the better it keeps in the cellar.” This suggests that proper placement according to natural orientation helps prevent internal damage. By storing the gourds in the same way they were grown, the risk of internal lacerations is reduced. Although there is a wealth of traditional knowledge about storing these ripe gourds, there has been no comprehensive study or systematic summary of these methods. Research on this topic remains limited both domestically and internationally, making it a promising area for further development and exploration. With more scientific attention, we may uncover better ways to preserve this valuable crop for longer periods.
