Earthworms are used as a medicinal resource, and when their population density reaches saturation, it's essential to harvest them in large quantities. However, some female earthworms should be retained for breeding purposes. The harvesting of adult females is carried out in two distinct phases. The first phase occurs before mid-August. During this time, the egg-laying blocks from the current year can be hatched successfully. To support continued breeding, it's not advisable to harvest in batches. Typically, only the adults that are still in their prime reproductive stage—before they start aging—are collected during this period. The second phase takes place from mid-August until just before winter. At this point, all female earthworms that began spawning the previous year can be harvested in batches according to their spawning cycles. This helps prevent a large number of older or weaker individuals from dying during the winter months. Once harvested, the earthworms should be placed into containers, then boiled with hot water and crushed. After removing any remaining clay, they should be dried on a brazier. The final product should be free of cracks, pests, and mold, and should have a dark brown color. Once fully dried, they are packed into cartons or wooden boxes and stored in a dry, well-ventilated area. This careful process ensures the quality and potency of the earthworms, making them suitable for medicinal use. Proper handling and storage also help maintain their effectiveness over time. By following these steps, farmers and herbalists can efficiently manage their earthworm populations while preserving the value of the harvested material.
