The harsh cold of winter can make driving more challenging and uncomfortable. To help drivers stay alert and efficient, the author would like to remind all drivers and fellow road users to take care of their eyes, especially after long hours of work or fatigue. Here are some simple yet effective eye exercises you can do during breaks to reduce eye strain and improve focus: 1. Gently rotate your eyes in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions for about 10 times each. Then, move your eyes up, down, left, and right for another 10 repetitions. This helps improve blood circulation around the eyes and reduces tension. 2. Use both thumbs to gently massage the sides of your nose, starting from the bridge of your nose and moving along your eyebrows toward your temples. Perform this massage for 24 rounds, gradually increasing pressure from light to moderate. Make sure to start and end with gentle movements to avoid any discomfort. 3. Rub your palms together until they become warm, then place them over your eyelids for about one minute. Repeat this 3–5 times. This technique helps soothe tired eyes and may prevent vision deterioration over time. 4. Practice "head traffic clearance" by standing upright, keeping your head still, and focusing on a distant object. This exercise helps relax your eyes and improves visual clarity, especially if you're experiencing blurred vision due to fatigue. 5. Sit quietly and let your eyes scan the surroundings without moving your head. Focus on 10 different objects for 10 seconds each, then try to recall their names and the order in which you saw them. This mental exercise enhances your eyes' ability to focus quickly and strengthens the connection between your eyes and brain. These simple routines can be done anytime, anywhere, and are great for maintaining eye health, especially during the cold season when fatigue is more common. Take a few minutes to care for your eyes — it's an important step in staying safe and alert while driving.
