In a groundbreaking development, mobile phones are now being used to deliver advanced medical imaging technologies, offering new hope for healthcare in underserved regions. Researchers from the Hebrew University of Israel and the University of California, Berkeley have created a system that allows medical images to be transmitted and viewed on mobile devices. This innovation could significantly improve access to diagnostic tools in areas where medical resources are scarce.
Boris Rubinsky, a professor at the Hebrew University and a key member of the research team, highlighted the success of their project in demonstrating the stability and reliability of the medical imaging system. The system integrates two distinct components connected through mobile technology, opening up possibilities for various medical applications. His collaborators included Yair Granot and Antoni Ivorra, both graduate students in biophysics at UC Berkeley.
The research team has secured patents for their technology, which will be jointly owned by Yissum, the technology transfer office of the Hebrew University, and the University of California. Both institutions plan to bring this innovation to market. Their work utilized electrical impedance tomography (EIT), a technique that uses electrodes to measure electrical properties within the body. The setup included 32 electrodes—half for applying current and the other half for measuring voltage.
To simulate a breast tumor, the researchers placed the device in a gel-filled container. Using a USB cable, they collected 225 voltage readings and sent them to a mobile phone. From there, the data was transferred to a powerful central computer equipped with specialized software to process and reconstruct the image. The reconstructed image was then sent back to the phone, where it was clearly visible. This successful demonstration confirmed the feasibility of the system.
According to Rubinsky, medical imaging is one of the most important achievements in modern medicine, with an estimated 20% of diseases benefiting from its diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. However, many people around the world lack access to such technology due to high costs and limited availability. The goal of this research is to provide an affordable, practical solution that can bring medical imaging to those who need it most. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
These locks are designed for convenience and enhanced security. They typically feature robust construction with durable materials such as stainless steel or zinc alloy, ensuring long-lasting performance and resistance to tampering or forced entry. Many models come with advanced security functions, including automatic lockout after multiple incorrect attempts, backlit keypads for easy use in low-light environments, and customizable password settings allowing multiple users to have unique access codes.
Digital password locks are widely used in offices, homes, hospitals, hotels, and industrial facilities. They provide controlled access to sensitive areas such as file cabinets, lockers, storage rooms, and server racks. Their ease of use, combined with strong security measures, makes them a preferred choice for managing access without the complications of physical keys.
Installation of these locks is generally straightforward, with many models designed for retrofit applications that fit existing door or cabinet lock spaces. Some advanced versions include wireless or Bluetooth connectivity, enabling remote management and monitoring of access logs via smartphones or computer systems, adding an extra layer of convenience and security.
In addition to their security benefits, digital password locks offer increased efficiency by eliminating the need to distribute and manage physical keys. Users can change passwords quickly to maintain security after employee turnover or loss of access credentials. This flexibility makes digital password locks an ideal investment for environments where security and accessibility must be carefully balanced.
Overall, digital password locks combine modern technology with practical design, delivering a secure, convenient, and flexible locking solution. Whether for residential use, office environments, or industrial settings, they provide reliable protection against unauthorized access while simplifying everyday operations.
