According to the British "Daily Mail" report, the 25-year-old Lisa McKay was once addicted to cola, drinking 20 cans a day, and the weight soared to a maximum of 122 kilograms. In order to lose weight, she had to quit Coke and receive gastric banding surgery, which eventually reduced her weight by half. She lamented: "Now I will not be stuck anywhere."

In fact, sugary drinks not only lead to obesity, but also increase the risk of diabetes. Recently, a study conducted by Yang Yongling Medical College of the National University of Singapore and US researchers found that drinking more sugary drinks, even without causing too much weight gain, will increase the risk of developing diabetes.

The basic data of the study was derived from the Singapore Chinese Health Survey conducted in 1993-1998. At that time, 63,000 Chinese people aged 53 years old provided information on dietary and lifestyle habits. Afterwards, the researchers conducted a follow-up survey of them for several years and found that 2,273 people had diabetes. By analyzing their dietary habits, the researchers found that among those who gained more than three kilograms in five years, those who consumed sugary carbonated drinks at least twice a week had a 70% higher risk of developing diabetes than those who didn’t drink. Those who weighed People who have little or no change, those who love sweet drinks have a 20% higher risk of developing diabetes than those who do not.

Research participant, Associate Professor Xu Enpei of the School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore, Yang Min-ling pointed out that this is the first large-scale study for Asians. Similar studies done by European countries and the United States have shown that drinking sweet drinks will increase the risk of diabetes. She said that a 40-gram cane of Coke far exceeds people's imagination. "If you don't have the habit of drinking sweet drinks, you can reduce at least 16 of the 100 new diabetics."

In response, Dr. Chen Wei, deputy chief physician of the Department of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, pointed out that the fact that people are overlooked is that sugary drinks in the market generally have higher caloric content. The relationship between them and the onset of diabetes has long been academia. Concern that "is not only one of the sugar, generally added fructose, syrup and other sweet substances may be a predisposing factor in diabetes." He suggested that to prevent diabetes, it is best to develop the habit of drinking boiled water.
