Fertilization is a crucial part of caring for ramulus species, particularly during the root growth cycle. The first major root growth period typically occurs from early October to early November, making this the ideal time to apply basal fertilizer. Applying it in October allows the nutrients to be absorbed gradually by the roots, supporting strong and healthy root development. This also helps prepare the plant for flowering, new shoot growth, and fruit enlargement in the following spring. However, many farmers currently apply basal fertilizers in the spring, which is not optimal. At that time, the fertilizers may not have fully decomposed, making it difficult for the young shoots and fruits to absorb the necessary nutrients.
When choosing fertilizer types, organic options such as livestock manure, cake fertilizer, or compost are commonly used. For each tree, about 10-15 kg of manure, 15-20 kg of compost, or 1-2 kg of cake fertilizer is typically recommended. Adding a small amount of biological fertilizer can further enhance the effectiveness of the nutrient supply.
The method of application varies depending on whether the tree is mature or young. For adult trees, ring fertilization is often used, where a circular trench is dug around the trunk based on the canopy size. The trench should be 20-30 cm deep and then covered with soil after applying the fertilizer. Since large trees have extensive root systems, it’s best to concentrate the fertilizer in specific areas. Hole-like or radial fertilization methods can be effective. For example, digging 5-6 holes around the canopy or creating 5-7 radial trenches (about 70-80 cm long, 30-40 cm wide, and 30 cm deep) can help distribute the nutrients more efficiently.
For young trees, disc-shaped fertilization is more suitable. A flat area around the trunk is created, roughly matching the canopy size, and the fertilizer is applied at a depth of 20-30 cm. Afterward, the soil is replaced, and a small mound is formed around the fertilized area.
When applying organic fertilizers, it's important to ensure they are well-decomposed. Undecomposed materials can attract pests like termites. Additionally, avoid using restricted pesticides such as carbofuran. Finally, when applying basal fertilizer, care should be taken not to damage the roots excessively, as this can harm the tree’s health and growth.
