Successfully developed artificial cornea in the United States An interdisciplinary research team composed of ophthalmology experts and chemical engineers from Stanford University has successfully developed an artificial cornea.
The material constituting the artificial cornea is duoptix, which is a two-layer network structure material formed by interlacing hydrogels. One layer consists of polyethylene glycol molecules, which have anti-surface protein accumulation and anti-inflammatory effects, and the other layer is a superabsorbent layer composed of polyacrylic acid molecules. The artificial cornea has a dish shape, is transparent in the center, and is densely covered with micropores. After being placed in the eye, the epithelial cells will infiltrate into the micropores and secrete collagen, thereby connecting the artificial cornea to the adjacent natural tissue, and then growing on the artificial cornea.
