In late autumn, it's essential to prepare plastic greenhouses for the storage of a large quantity of cucumbers after the harvest season. Before and after the first frost, dig trenches in an east-west direction in shaded areas. The trenches should be 1.7 to 2 meters wide and 1.3 meters deep. The length can vary depending on the number of cucumbers you plan to store. The soil removed from the trench should be used to build a wall around the pit, with a height of about 1 meter and a thickness ranging from 0.7 to 2 meters.
On the southern, northern, and western walls, install ventilation holes measuring 40 x 40 cm. The eastern wall should have a door for access. Place a wooden pole across the top of the trench, then cover it with 20 to 30 cm of corn stalks, followed by a layer of 20 cm of soil. A ventilated skylight should also be installed at the top of the trench. If there is no natural shade, consider adding a shading structure on the southern side of the pit.
Inside the storage pit, set up brick or bamboo shelves along the walls, dividing the space into 3 to 4 levels. Carefully place the cucumbers into the pit in the morning, arranging them on the shelves. Ensure that each layer of cucumbers does not exceed 20 cm in thickness to prevent damage. During the day, open the skylight to allow sunlight in, but close the ventilation holes and doors. After sunset, open the skylights, ventilation holes, and doors to let fresh air circulate and cool the temperature inside.
Adjust the ventilation based on the weather conditions—reduce the time spent ventilating when it's colder, and ensure proper airflow during the day while keeping everything closed at night to maintain insulation. To prevent the cucumbers from wilting, spray them with fresh water once or twice daily. Throughout the storage period, inspect and turn the cucumbers every 10 to 15 days, removing any that show signs of spoilage. With proper care, cucumbers can be stored for up to 30 days with excellent results.
