Cymbidium, a perennial orchid known for its elegance and beauty, is highly favored in the global flower market. Many gardeners, however, find that these once-blooming flowers often fail to return the next year, leading to the term "one-time flowers." In reality, Cymbidium cultivation isn’t as challenging as it may seem. With proper care and understanding of its needs, you can ensure it blooms again the following season.
First, after the blooming period ends, typically 1–3 months after purchase, it's essential to remove the spent flowers. Cut back the flower stem just above the base to encourage new growth and prevent energy from being wasted on old blooms.
Second, maintaining warmth is crucial, especially during winter. The ideal temperature should not drop below 8°C, and if heating stops early, cover the pot with plastic film and place it in a sunny area. If temperatures remain low, consider using an air conditioner to keep the room above 10°C.
Third, choose the right potting mix. Avoid repotting immediately after flowering. Wait until after the Qingming Festival when temperatures stabilize. Use clay pots with good drainage, and prepare a mix of pine bark, charcoal, crushed stone, and coarse sand in a 1:1:3:1 ratio. Soak the mix before use, and after planting, water lightly to help the soil settle.
Fourth, manage the plant carefully:
1. Watering: Cymbidium prefers high humidity. Water every 1–3 days in winter and early spring, and mist 1–2 times daily in summer. Use a fine spray to maintain moisture without overwatering.
2. Fertilizing: During the growing season, apply diluted liquid fertilizer (0.02%) 1–2 times. You can also use organic fertilizers mixed with bone meal or superphosphate to make slow-release pellets. Apply a 0.1–0.2% compound fertilizer solution occasionally.
3. Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Place it near a south-facing window, but avoid direct sunlight in summer. Use 50% shade net during hot months and remove it in winter for more light. During blooming, reduce light intensity to maintain beautiful flowers.
4. Temperature: Ideal growth range is 15–25°C. In summer, avoid temperatures above 35°C. In autumn, keep temperatures below 25°C to support healthy bud development.
5. Pest control: Common issues include white mold, leaf spot, scale insects, spider mites, and aphids. Treat white mold with copper oxychloride (12%) diluted 600–800 times. For leaf spots, use thiophanate-methyl or carbendazim. Spray oil-based solutions for scale insects, and use mild detergents for spider mites. A natural remedy involves boiling Pulsatilla root and spraying the solution to control aphids.
With these care tips, your Cymbidium will thrive and reward you with beautiful blooms year after year.
