How to Turn Rice Husk into a Great Fermentation Matrix Rice husks vary in composition depending on the variety, origin, and processing method. On average, they contain about 12% moisture, 36% carbon, 0.48% nitrogen, 0.32% phosphorus, and 0.27% potassium. Their composition is similar to rice straw, but rice husks have significantly higher levels of silica. The carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of rice husks can be as high as 75.6%, making them one of the more challenging organic materials for fermentation. Traditional fermentation agents often struggle to break them down effectively. To improve the fermentation process, it’s recommended to first treat the rice husks with urea or livestock urine. This helps balance the nutrient content and makes the material more suitable for microbial activity. Here's how to proceed: First, prepare the materials. For every ton of rice husks, you'll need 4 kg of urea and 10 kg of rice bran. Next, moisten the rice husks by adding 500 kg of water per ton of material. This will bring the moisture content to around 60-65%. Let the mixture rest for at least 24 hours. Then, dissolve 4 kg of urea in 50 kg of water and evenly spray it onto the rice husk pile. After 12 hours, mix 2 kg of microbial fermentation agent with 10 kg of rice bran and dilute it thoroughly. Spread this mixture evenly over the rice husk heap. Make sure the height doesn’t exceed 2 meters and the area stays under 50 square meters. Once the pile is ready, cover it with an air-permeable tarp to maintain heat and moisture. When the temperature reaches 65-70°C and stays there for 36 hours, it’s time for the first turning. Repeat the process several times until the fermentation is complete.
