Schisandra root rot, also known as "bad ankle and neck disease," is one of the most significant diseases affecting Schisandra crops. This condition is becoming increasingly prevalent and causes serious damage to the plants. The disease typically occurs between early May and early August. In its initial stages, the epidermis at the junction of the root and the soil surface—commonly referred to as the root and neck area—turns dark, and the cortex begins to decay and fall off. A ring-like lesion forms, leading to wilting of the leaves. Within a few days, the entire plant may die. The disease is closely linked to physiological factors. During early spring and late autumn, when the ground temperature fluctuates significantly, the tissues in the root and neck area become soft, reducing their resistance to infection. This makes them more susceptible to bacterial infections, which can lead to root rot. The disease tends to be more severe in heavy clay soils that retain water, where poor drainage, excessive growth, and insufficient maturity of the plant's vegetative parts contribute to higher infection rates. To manage this disease effectively, several measures should be taken. First, it is essential to choose well-drained loamy or sandy soils for planting Schisandra, avoiding low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. Second, implement comprehensive agricultural practices by applying sufficient organic fertilizer and ensuring proper drainage during the rainy season. In autumn, it is advisable to mound about 30 centimeters of soil around the roots before winter to protect them from freezing. Third, minimize root and plant damage during cultivation. Finally, if the disease is detected early, apply a 500-fold dilution of 50% carbendazim wettable powder to the roots, or use a 30% soil bacteria elimination agent mixed with water to irrigate the root zone. These steps can help reduce the spread and impact of the disease, ensuring healthier and more productive Schisandra crops.
