Recently, on the basis of the success of clinical trials of superficial tumor treatment, China has made new progress in the treatment of tumors with heavy ions. The clinical trial of deep tumor treatment was initiated at the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
As of April 3, a number of patients have begun to receive treatment at the Gansu Heavy Ion Beam Therapy Clinical Research Base at the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences after signing a clinical trial volunteer. "This clinical trial is still carried out jointly by the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Gansu Provincial Cancer Hospital, the Lanzhou Military Region Lanzhou General Hospital and other medical institutions. This is different from the original clinical trial of shallow tumor treatment with a depth of less than 2.5 cm. The second clinical trial of deep tumor treatment with a depth of more than 2.5 cm was carried out," said Hu Zhengguo, deputy director of the Science and Technology Department of the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In November 2006, the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and local health agencies began a clinical trial study on the treatment of super-ionized shallow tumors. Hu Zhengguo said, "The clinical treatment trials of 8 batches of 103 patients with superficial tumors have been carried out, and the curative effect is very significant, indicating that China has achieved initial success in the clinical trial of heavy ion superficial treatment of human tumors." In 2008, the newly-built Lanzhou was used. The treatment terminal for the treatment of deep tumors with high-energy heavy ion beam provided by the heavy ion accelerator cooling storage ring was completed at the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the beam test and the first batch of cell and animal experiments were completed. The clinical trial study of deep ion deep tumor treatment started recently has been carried out on this basis.
