The production of melanin occurs in organelles called melanosomes and is regulated by the pH of the melanosomes. Researchers such as Zhou Dalei from the Weil-Cornell Medical School in the United States have found that cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) produced by soluble adenylate cyclase (sAC) can cause melanosome pH and tyrosinase. (Enzyme inhibiting melanin synthesis) activity is reduced. Lack of soluble adenylate cyclase increases mouse melanosome pH and melanin deposition. This mechanism of rapid regulation of melanin synthesis can be used to reduce the risk of skin cancer in people with light skin.
