There has recently been a “high-level†DIY project: women can complete part of the breast reconstruction with an instrument at home.
The purpose of this instrument is not only to make the treatment more comfortable and convenient, but also to bring more active participation and control to women in the follow-up treatment of breast cancer.
In the United States, more than 100,000 women remove breasts each year because of breast cancer, and most of them choose implants for postoperative breast reconstruction. In order to create a space for the implant, the patient needs to load a temporary pouch at the corresponding location and gradually add saline to it to achieve the remaining skin and muscle after stretching. Therefore, patients need to go to the hospital 1-2 times a week, which is very painful for many patients.
Daniel Jacobs , an orthopaedic surgeon from California, said: " Whenever a patient comes to the clinic, we will put as much saline as possible until the patient says it can't stand it. "
Until one day, on the way home, Dr. Daniel Jacobs suddenly thought of why the small tank containing compressed air used to handle leaking tires could not be used on patients. If possible, the patient can swell his or her own tissue spreader at home so that the patient can stretch the tissue at a small amount each time, and the resulting pain is greatly reduced. Later, Dr. Daniel Jacobs found a California company and told him what he thought, so he developed an instrument called AeroForm . The instrument has been introduced to the market in Australia and Europe, and is being reviewed by the US Food and Drug Administration.
The use of this instrument does not require any special training. Patients can control the air content in the temporary pouch through a palm-sized object. The patient can perform up to three operations per day depending on the patient's own feelings.
One study compared breast cancer postoperative patients with AeroForm and postoperative breast cancer patients who underwent conventional treatment. The former spent only half of the time in the tissue expansion phase before receiving the implant, and the two treatments The side effects of the method, such as the incidence of infection, were not statistically different, but the frequency of failure of the AeroForm instrument was slightly higher than the traditional method.
The researchers said: "The AeroForm instrument allows patients to be more dominant in their treatment, which is important for the patient's psychological changes."
Luincys Fernandez , a 35 -year-old breast cancer patient from New York who was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was pregnant with her second child, used AeroForm and participated in the survey. Luincys Fernandez said: " I really like this creation. I only completed the expansion of the organization in 18 days. It will not affect my life at all, and I can also decide according to my own size requirements. The extent to which I expand my organization. "
Overall, AeroForms are more expensive than traditional methods, but they are more convenient to use and provide more comfort to the patient.
